Hello Mosh Families....and Happy New Year!

In this newsletter check out our upcoming ken events, cool Jewish events in the D.C. area, resources and ideas for Tubishvat and a video from the Hannuakah sleepover!

UPCOMING EVENTS:

MBI and Workshop Information Session Sunday, January 29th
If your child is considering going on MBI (the 4 Week Habonim Dror summer program in Israel for pre--11th graders) or Workshop (the 9-month gap year program for post-high schoolers) come hear about these programs from the Habonim Dror Programs Director, Brianna Fowler, who will be giving a presentation and answering questions. Parents and campers are both encouraged to come!

The MBI information session will take place from 2-3pm and the Workshop information session will take place from 3-4pm at the Hollander household, 1241 Cresthaven Dr. Silver Spring MD, 20903. Refreshments will be served.

Anaf Hanafa

This Sunday, Anaf Hanafa, the Mosh Ken's new service-learning group, had an exciting MLK kick-off event! Chanichim in grades 8-11 critically examined Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and discussed their roles in the continuing struggle for civil rights and racial and socio-economic equality in the United States. Afterward, they assembled about 100 servings of baked ziti for Martha's Table--a non-profit organization in D.C. that provides hundreds of homeless and low-income people with meals every day. Some of them also chose to participate in a letter writing campaign through Amnesty International asking the Governor of Missouri to pardon Reggie Clemens, a prisoner on death row, as a way to fight against injustice in the criminal justice system.

Israeli Film Festival, Tuesday January 21st

The Israeli Film Festival at Tikvat Israel Congregation is showing "Galilee Eskimos" on January 21st at 7:45 pm. For more information check out their website!

2012 Hafla Delegation, January 21st, 22nd, 26th, 29th

The Jewish Federation is proud to present the 2012 Hafla delegation!! This is a series of parties dedicated to celebrating Israeli culture, food, music and tradition. Check out their website to find out the dates and times for the location nearest you!!

Tis the Season to be Sleepin

As dusk fell over Tiferith Israel Congregation last Saturday we gathered together for our last event before the holidays. Chanichim (campers) from every kvutzah (age group) came together to celebrate Havdallah, perform acts for a musicale, and take part in a camp wide Hanukkah Trivia game!! Everyone filled the basement of Tiferith Israel with such high energy, making the event so much fun! Thank you to all the madrichim (counselors) and chanichim that came out to celebrate with us!

Helping hands during Thanksgiving

On the evening before Thanksgiving, members of Eizor Moshava and some friends from the community came to the JCC of Greater Washington for our annual Thanksgiving Tikun Olam. Everyone had a great time making sandwiches for Martha's Table, learning about social justice, a core component of Habonim Dror, and having fun with their old and new friends! Sandwiches will be delivered to Martha's table some time this week.

Inspirational story from the educational activity we ran:

One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed
a boy picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean.

Approaching the boy, he asked, "What are you doing?"

The youth replied, Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going out. "If I don' t throw them back, they'll die."

Son, the man said, don't you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? "You can't make a difference!"

After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish,
and threw it back into the surf. Then, smiling at the man, he said
"I made a difference for that one."

1. Thanksgiving Tikkun Olam Event, November 23, 2011
Chanichim and friends are invited to come together to make sandwiches for Martha's Table and to learn with the rest of the Mosh community. Join us thisWednesday, November 23, at the Rockville JCC (6125 Montrose Road, Rockville, MD 20852) from 7:30 to 9:00 pm. All kids in grades 3-10 are invited to join us for this meaningful experience! 2. Hannukah Sleepover, December 3-4, 2011
Our annual Hannukah Sleepover is in less than two weeks! Get ready for a night of kef (fun), chinuch (education) and tarbut (culture)! Remember to prepare an act for musicale/medurah!

Pick Up: Sunday 12/4 at 8:30am

3. Community Connections Week, December 4-8, 2011
This year instead of Super Sunday, The Jewish Federation and partner agencies are joining together for a week of action. This annual campaign provides support for critical programs and services in our community, in Israel, and around the world. Find an event near you and show the Jewish community that Mosh cares! Community-Wide Kumzits

Last night, January 19th, members of Camp Moshava joined the D.C. area Jewish community at the Jewish Folk Arts Festival Concert, "Community-Wide Kumzits". In addition to some members volunteering, setting up food and signs, passing out programs, etc., we had a fun time singing along to familiar Jewish folk songs and doing some rikudiam(Israeli dancing). We even got to take home shironim, song books, that we may be able to use at camp. We had such a great time and cannot wait to show more of our Mosh pride in the community in the future!

Visit from our Central Shaliah

So this is a bit late, but on October 13th, Julian Resnick, the central Shaliah of Habonim Dror North America, came to visit the LOLZ household. While he was here we engaged in discussion about the release of Gilad Shalit, the Israeli soldier who was held captive in Gaza for a number of years. A number of questions were raised during our discussion:

- What has Gilad become a symbol of for Israel and the Jewish people?
- Is one soldier worth the release of so many terrorists?
- Should Israel be developing rehabilitation programs for the terrorists they capture in case they are released in the future, as is the case for the terrorists being released in return for Gilad?
- What are the repercussions of Gilad’s release for Israel?
Luckily Gilad was released October 18th alive. We can’t even imagine the repercussions if Hamas had returned him back to Israel in a casket like they did with another two Israeli soldiers a few years back.

Last Wednesday night we all gathered in a classroom at Adat Shalom Congregation to learn first hand from members of the Dror Israel movement about the tent-city protests taking place in Israel. Sivan Bamberger (a Mosh alumnus) and Gilad Perry gave us the opportunity to ask questions about the tent-city protest and the Dror Israel movement as a whole. We were so lucky to have this opportunity to partner with our sister movement in Israel. Thank you to everyone who attended and to Ameinu who helped us organize this event!

Fall Overnight in Review

This past weekend was Eizor Moshava's biggest Fall Overnight ever! Over 90 kids + staff returned to Mosh's camp site for a Mosh style Shabbat plus some fun additions. From Pish(activities by age group) to Rosh Hashana style Mishpachot(activities by area where you live) to a relaxing musical (musical and theater performances), a fun time was had by all. We even had a silly adults versus babies machaneh wide activity! It got everyone excited for the events to come.

The Kupa Brunch

This past Sunday was the annual Kupa Brunch! We all gathered at the Hurley's house to take part in hitkansut (our daily flag raising ceremony), peulot (activities by age group) and of course some shmoozing and eating! Even the rain couldn't dampen our spirits as parents and campers alike got a chance to catch up.
